A chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries

Who We Are

ACRL Washington, established in June 1980, is a chapter of the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association. The goals of the Washington State Chapter of ACRL are to provide opportunities for the professional growth of and communication among academic and research librarians; to encourage the exchange of ideas and information relating to library development; and to enhance library service to all users of the academic and research libraries in the state.

What We Do

ACRL Washington...

  • Publishes a newsletter twice a year featuring stories and news about our members, including descriptions of notable projects in our libraries, book reviews, reviews of conferences attended by our members, staffing and organizational changes, and more.
  • Hosts a joint conference with ACRL Oregon every fall (usually October); in even years, the conference is hosted by ACRL Oregon and in odd years, the conference is hosted by ACRL Washington.
  • Award scholarships to allow professionals and LIS students to attend the joint conference.
  • Recognize local libraries with an Award for Excellence.
  • Provides professional development in various forms, including networking opportunities, webinars, workshops, and trainings. These offerings vary from year to year.
  • Creates a community of library workers in academic libraries who share professional interests in library management, reference services, instruction/teaching, collection development, technical services, and emerging technologies.
  • Holds an election each spring (around March) to vote in a Board; new members of the Board take their positions on July 1.

About Our Board

ACRL Washington is governed by a Board, all of whom are elected by our membership. Elections are held in the spring each year (approximately March). The new Board takes effect on July 1 each calendar year. Roles and terms vary; for details, refer to our Board Position Descriptions. You are encouraged to run for office to make this organization reflect your values and priorities. If you have any questions, please email
